Above The Sun
by Andrew Millar.
Limited Edition of 40
Using a distinctive combination of collage, Polaroid instant film and precious metal leaf, Andrew MILLAR weaves his elegant compositions like a tapestry, treading a haunting line between reality and fantasy. Each component of the collage has been plucked from a variety of vintage sources. Surrounded by music in the studio, Millar works instinctively - interlacing the elements to create his surreal, duo-chromatic portraits.
Traditional print and photography processes fascinate Millar. He never ceases to explore the manipulative potential of this light-sensitive medium. Always favouring the angibility of analog over digital immediacy. No two pieces in the edition can ever be the same. Each print is developed, treated and gilded by hand and sometimes accented with acrylic, ink and spray paint.
But far more meaningful than the construction is the story Millar tells. Through the timeless subject of the female portrait, he creates connections. From an incandescent universe, each soul sings to the viewer, calling us in to their dystopian world. Awakening a part of ourselves - if we dare to dream.

Bio
Andrew MILLAR is a British artist whose main body of work focuses on the portrait.
Early on he became fascinated by various print processes as well as photography. He has since been pushing the limits and exploring the manipulative potential of this light sensitive material for his collages. He applies leaf of precious metals and sometime’s acrylic colour in the finishing process by hand, thereby creating a unique piece with each artwork.
He produces work using vintage Polaroid SX-70 cameras whilst exploring manual manipulation techniques using analog instant film.
Using instant film, he achieves effects by manipulating the emulsion during the developing process, separating the image emulsion from the film base, double exposing the film, overlaying the transparencies or by varying the temperature and the developing time.
This technique enhances the surreal, dreamlike mood of the image and inspires us to question what is real.
The manipulated polaroid is here transformed into a hand finished, gold leafed, limited edition screen print
