JonOne's Urban Hieroglyphics: An Invitation To Illumination
JonOne summons up graffiti and lettering, memories of his New York years, to develop a freestyle calligraphy populated by colour-cuts and drippings that give his works all their vitality.
His explosive gestures capture the energy of the city. John Andrew Perello aka JonOne literally projects himself into his canvases, offering us luminous fragments of urbanity. The City of Light sparkles with a thousand lights.
Attending artistic happenings, particularly at Studio 54, JonOne rubbed shoulders with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.
He has this mad freedom within him, which he breathes into the whole world, as heir to these 2 adepts of the no-limit movement and to Jackson Pollock and Jean Dubuffet.
Amazed by his work, we understand how Champollion must have felt when he read the Egyptian hieroglyphs with an open book, thanks to the rosary stone.
To take the time to contemplate such a work is to open your mind to a territory as vast as it is unknown. But at the end of this mental journey, there is this light that inevitably dazzles with its vital force.

Listen Up
and I’ll Tell A Story
A never-ending story, a story of my journey.
People look at it and they’ve labeled it as it’s been my punishment, the punishment series.
Why the punishment series? When you look at the lithograph the first thing you see is my name. It brought back memories when I used to paint my name everywhere in the trains. The art of calligraphy – writing my name. It also goes back when I was in school and to punish me the teachers had been giving me to write stuff like, for example, pages from the dictionary.
The graffiti, for me, is something really personal. It takes me to so many places and opened so many doors for me and this is the part, which is really shiny, but it’s always two ways. Sometimes I feel like I am carrying a cross and that’s the part where the punishment comes.
Sparkles make the lithograph look like diamonds – diamond dust; and that’s why I call it “Visions Of An Angel”…
