Ross Muir is a Glasgow based artist with an interest in figurative art and portraiture painting in oils.

Famous for his 'Square Gogh' painting of Van Gogh in Adidas, Ross Muir is a renowned self-taught artist who received international acclaim from the legendary piece and it quickly became recognisable among his other works of art.

Whilst his work displays an array of expansive painting techniques, depth, draughtsmanship, texture and scale, it is also known for being both witty and daring in style.

Recreating iconic artworks and imagery with a contemporary twist, Muir’s works are inspired by the history of art.

Andy Warhol can be considered the greatest portrait painter of the 20th century, not only in terms of the number of images he produced, but also in terms of the influence of his portraits and the notoriety he brought to those portrayed.

He brought into the history of art the celebrities of the moment, personal dramas such as the death of Marilyn. Yet he follows in the great tradition of portraiture, but using the means of reproduction of his time.

Alike the American Pop artist, Ross Muir likes the absence of perspective, the bright colours applied in flat areas, the grain of the paper and the slight shifts in the photographic reproductions.

With MAZZA, a tribute to Monroe paintings that this painting is riffing on, Ross Muir follows in the footsteps of Andy Warhol and gives us a bright mix of fine portraiture and spontaneity to blend the icon of all times with today’s street culture codes … and make her look more vividly alive than ever.
